Students

The Triangle Program is Canada's only classroom for LGBT youth. The Triangle program works with a very diverse group of disenfranchised youth who are not able to (currently) work in a mainstream school setting. The Triangle Program allows students to experience academic success and earn credits toward their high school diploma. More importantly the Triangle Program allows students to develop the life-skills,confidence,pride and finesse they need to be successful when they transition back to their larger lives,be that mainstream schools, other alternative schools, work and/or post-secondary education.2009-2010 Triangle Program Demographic Summary In the 2009-2010 school year we saw 63 youth come through our doors. The following pie charts give a snap shot of the demographics of our community in this school year

Triangle Students' Race/Ethnicity in 2009-10

Of a population of 63 students,33% left us at some point during the school year.At Triangle,we think we do a good job breaking down the barriers that our youth have experienced with homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism in the mainstream system. We do this by representing LGBTQ people and accomplishments in our curriculum,by providing a safer space,by building community and by truely caring about each and everyone of our students. However, once these barriers are broken down, there are other obstacles that surface. The segments of our population that have a higher probability of dropping out are
  1. Visible minorities.
  2. Youth who come to us from a home situation that include the shelter system, group homes or living independently.
We recognize that our youth are not just an orientation,or a gender identification.....they have a faith,a history,a past and a challenging life trying to survive outside our school walls.  Triangle staff has little control over some of these struggles but we do make the commitment to our youth to strive to be more inclusive and to work harder to facilitate breaking down all barriers that prevent them from making school a goal and to reach their true potential. We promise to do better.
